Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah binti Haji Mohamad Ali is the wife of the current Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. As wife of the Prime Minister, she campaigned tirelessly for women’s health, family planning, drug abuse control and adult literacy. The Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Award was named in her honour to recognise outstanding contributions by civil society to the HIV/AIDS cause.

THE TUN DR SITI HASMAH AWARD 2019

The Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Award recognises outstanding contributions by organisations and individuals towards meeting the goal of ending the AIDS epidemic as a public health concern in Malaysia.

Established in 1996 by the MAF and presented as one of the highlights of the Red Ribbon Gala, it is a ‘thank you’ note to these organisations and individuals for their exemplary courage, commitment and dedication to creating sustainable impact on communities most affected by HIV/AIDS.

MAF places great importance in highlighting excellence in efforts to respond effectively to HIV/AIDS with the hope of encouraging more organisations and individuals to be more proactive, innovative and committed to the cause.

FIELDS OF WORK FOR CONSIDERATION

  • Prevention of HIV
  • Raising awareness of HIV/AIDS issues
  • Treatment, care and support for people living with HIV
  • Programmes to reduce HIV/AIDS vulnerabilities for key populations
  • Advocacy and protection of human rights for people living with HIV and key populations
  • Fundraising for a HIV/AIDS cause

ELIGIBILITY OF NOMINEES

  • An individual who is a Malaysian citizen or an organization based in Malaysia. An individual or organization cannot nominate themselves. Nominations MUST be made by a third party.
  • Contributions by the nominee must have been made between the period of Jan 2018 – Dec 2018.

MATRON FADZILAH ABDUL HAMID

2018 Winner of Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Award

For 20 years, Matron Fadzilah Abdul Hamid has cared for women and children affected by HIV. Her years of caring for those who needed help started when she was undergoing public health nurse training. She was inspired by one of her role models, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali. Dr Siti Hasmah was among her teachers in nursing school and tonight, Fadzilah received the Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Award from the prime minister’s wife for her contributions towards ending AIDS as a public health concern in Malaysia. Fadzilah is a full-time caregiver at Rumah Solehah, a shelter for women and children infected or affected by HIV. Fadzilah spent 30 years as a nurse with the Health Ministry, working in rural areas throughout Selangor, Johor, Pahang and Kuala Lumpur before being tasked to oversee operations and training at Rumah Solehah since its inception in 1998. To date, she has assisted more than 400 women through various ways such as providing them assistance with basic needs, skills to survive and helping them find meaning in life again.
