The Government has also been providing free to HIV treatment since 2006. However, only 40 per cent of people living with HIV are receiving treatment, a very low percentage considering that free medication is provided by the Government,\u201d said Professor Dato\u2019 Dr Adeeba Kamarulzaman, Chairman of the MAF.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFeeling the threat of stigma and discrimination, many people living with HIV continue to live their lives in fear and on the fringes of society. Many are afraid to come forward for treatment for fear of being exposed, refused treatment, and discriminated against.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have also seen the negative impact of stigma and discrimination in all aspects of life \u2013 employment, education, healthcare, and law enforcement \u2013 despite evidence showing that HIV, if treated, has no impact on productivity and risk of onward transmission through casual contact. When viewed from the lens of HIV and AIDS, it espouses the notion of freeing our minds from the root cause of stigma and discrimination \u2013 be it ignorance or apathy \u2013 and challenging our long-held beliefs, biases, and prejudices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a society, we simply must catch up to the progress made in the AIDS response. It saddens me that, even after thirty years, we are still talking about stigma and discrimination.
