TUN DR SITI HASMAH

Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah binti Haji Mohamad Ali is the wife of the former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. As wife of the Prime Minister, she campaigned tirelessly for women’s health, family planning, drug abuse control and adult literacy. The Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Award was named in her honour to recognise outstanding contributions by civil society to the HIV/AIDS cause.

THE TUN DR SITI HASMAH AWARD 2024

The Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Award recognises outstanding contributions by organisations and individuals towards meeting the goal of ending the AIDS epidemic as a public health concern in Malaysia.

Established in 1996 by the MAF and presented as one of the highlights of the Red Ribbon Gala, it is a ‘thank you’ note to these organisations and individuals for their exemplary courage, commitment and dedication to creating sustainable impact on communities most affected by HIV/AIDS.

MAF places great importance in highlighting excellence in efforts to respond effectively to HIV/AIDS with the hope of encouraging more organisations and individuals to be more proactive, innovative and committed to the cause.

Mohd Raffi’e bin Jaafar has emerged as the distinguished recipient of the prestigious Sunway-Malaysian AIDS Foundation Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Award. With an impressive track record spanning nearly two decades, Raffi’e has selflessly devoted his time and efforts to combating the challenges posed by this relentless epidemic.

For more than two decades, Raffi’e has been at the forefront of pioneering initiatives aimed at fostering constructive engagement between the transgender community and Islamic authorities.

Recognizing the need for understanding, acceptance, and support, he took the remarkable step of converting his own residence into a temporary shelter, offering solace and refuge to those affected by HIV/AIDS. Moreover, his altruistic endeavors extend beyond mere physical sanctuary as he consistently organizes Quran classes, imparting spiritual guidance and nurturing the well-being of individuals seeking solace under his mentorship.

Raffi’e’s compassion has garnered immense respect among newly HIV-diagnosed individuals. Fondly known as “Abang Long” within the community, he has earned a reputation as a knowledgeable and resourceful figure, sought after for his profound insights and astute advice. Whether it pertains to crucial aspects such as treatment options, medication management, marriage considerations, or the invaluable moral support essential for perseverance in the face of adversity, those affected by HIV/AIDS eagerly turn to Raffi’e as their trusted confidant and mentor.
