Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah binti Haji Mohamad Ali is the wife of the former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. As wife of the Prime Minister, she campaigned tirelessly for women’s health, family planning, drug abuse control and adult literacy. The Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Award was named in her honour to recognise outstanding contributions by civil society to the HIV/AIDS cause.

THE TUN DR SITI HASMAH AWARD 2021

The Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Award recognises outstanding contributions by organisations and individuals towards meeting the goal of ending the AIDS epidemic as a public health concern in Malaysia.

Established in 1996 by the MAF and presented as one of the highlights of the Red Ribbon Gala, it is a ‘thank you’ note to these organisations and individuals for their exemplary courage, commitment and dedication to creating sustainable impact on communities most affected by HIV/AIDS.

MAF places great importance in highlighting excellence in efforts to respond effectively to HIV/AIDS with the hope of encouraging more organisations and individuals to be more proactive, innovative and committed to the cause.

FIELDS OF WORK FOR CONSIDERATION

  • Prevention of HIV
  • Raising awareness of HIV/AIDS issues
  • Treatment, care and support for people living with HIV
  • Programmes to reduce HIV/AIDS vulnerabilities for key populations
  • Advocacy and protection of human rights for people living with HIV and key populations
  • Fundraising for a HIV/AIDS cause

ELIGIBILITY OF NOMINEES

  • Any Malaysian individual or organisation based in Malaysia.
  • Self-nominations and third party nominations are accepted.
  • Contributions by the nominee must have been made between the period of Jan 2019 – Dec 2020.

DR ZAITON YAHAYA

Winner of Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Award 2019

She is the driving force behind the SHAPE programme that provides financial aid for PLHIV from rural Sandakan, Sabah, to access treatment.

On the night of the Malaysian AIDS Foundation-Berjaya Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Award 2019 Gala Dinner, an Auditor from RSM Malaysia was given the honour of presenting a sealed envelope containing the name of the winner for this year and Prof Dato’ Dr. Adeeba Kamarulzaman, as the Chairman of MAF, announced Dr. Zaiton Yahaya as the proud winner of this year’s award.

Dr. Zaiton was presented with a stunning watch, courtesy of Rolex, a trophy, certificate of excellence and cash prize of RM20,000 by Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir, the Patron of the Foundation.

Dr. Zaiton Yahaya is the founder and President of the Sabah AIDS Awareness Group Association (SAGA), a non-profit organisation based in Sandakan and also a Partner Organisation of the Malaysian AIDS Council. A medical doctor by training and currently serving as the Sabah State Family Medicine Specialist, Dr. Zaiton was drawn towards the AIDS activism act out of disappointment for not being able to do more to help her patients who are suffering from HIV-related vulnerabilities and other socio-economic disparities that are common among patients from the low-income group in Sabah.
