Message by Patron of Malaysian AIDS Foundation, YBhg Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir.
Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,
Assalamualaikum and Good Evening.
Firstly I would like to apologise for not being able to join you this evening. This year’s Gala is a bit earlier than usual and unfortunately I had committed to an event abroad before I knew about the date of this important event in the Malaysian AIDS Foundation calendar.
Tonight’s dinner is a celebration of partnership. It marks the 13th edition of the Red Ribbon Gala which debuted in 1996 as a response to the emerging AIDS crisis then. Ever since, it has continued to provide much-needed resources to fight the disease in an ever-changing world where at different times, we face different challenges including the need to prioritise other needs including environmental disasters and other pandemics. But we must keep reminding our communities that HIV/AIDS is still with us and inattention as well as the diversion of funds away from our response will only allow it to thrive.
Thus we are extremely grateful for the enduring display of generosity by our donors – even in this less-than-ideal conditions as our nation grapples in this post-COVID era – has given us a renewed sense of optimism about the future of AIDS response in Malaysia. Thank you for your faith, trust and confidence in the work that we do.
Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah especially, thank you very much for your support. We are delighted to have Sunway on board, not just for the Gala, but across diverse areas of partnership with the Malaysian AIDS Foundation.
I also wish to congratulate Professor Dato Dr Adeeba Kamarulzaman, who always makes us proud internationally, and her team at MAF for keeping up the momentum of their good work. The Gala tonight is a result of their tremendous efforts over the last few months.
As we reflect on our progress, let us not forget that the AIDS epidemic is a complex disease with deep social impact. Although effective treatment for HIV infection is already established, many people living with HIV are not benefiting from such advances because of socio-economic disparities and the still ongoing stigma associated with the disease.
More than 30 years have gone by since the first case of AIDS in Malaysia and it is time for us to step up our game and confront the issue of sexual transmission, which is now the dominant method of HIV transmission. We should stop sidestepping the issue of sex education for young people and talk frankly about the preventive benefits of condoms. Most of all, we should create an enabling environment for at-risk populations to come forward and get tested and treated. As we have learnt from the Covid experience, testing is crucial because it not only leads to lifesaving treatments but it also gives us a far more accurate picture of who are most at risk.
Tonight I would like to express my gratitude to everyone who has lent that support both financially, materially and morally. Everyone of you is important to us because it is only with the contribution of everyone that we will be able to end this epidemic.
Enjoy your evening, thank you very much.
CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE
By Chairman of Malaysian AIDS Foundation, YBhg Professor Dato’ Dr Adeeba Kamarulzaman.
Message by Chairman of Malaysian AIDS Foundation, Professor Dato’ Dr Adeeba Kamarulzaman
Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,
We have lived through three extraordinary years of the pandemic. What seemed like a never-ending nightmare is now easing, thanks to the miracle of science in particular the vaccines. Thanks also to modern science, the HIV pandemic, feared for decades, is no longer a death sentence. Effective HIV treatment means that a person living with HIV can essentially have a normal life span, and if viral suppression is achieved, he or she will not pass it on to their sexual partner or unborn child. A concept known as U=U, Undetectable=Untransmissible. Another advance is in prevention. A pill a day or PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) reduces the risk of acquiring HIV from sex by 99%. It is with these advances and other existing prevention measures, that it is now conceivable that end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.
Unfortunately, science alone will not bring an end to the COVID nor HIV pandemics. Politics too play a big role in public health response. Otherwise, the US, home to some of the greatest scientific minds and the world’s best medical and research institutions would not have one of the largest number of deaths due to COVID in the advanced world. A soon to be published modelling analysis from colleagues from University of California San Diego shows the indirect impact of politics on COVID outcomes. Vaccine disinformation and consequently rejection of the COVID 19 vaccine in Texas USA, more common amongst Republicans showed a 68% more chance of dying from COVID. So ladies and gentlemen – given that we’re in the middle of our election season, I must caution you to be careful who you vote for, it could be a matter of life and death.
Politics aside, one of the biggest lessons learnt from both HIV and COVID 19 is that we cannot overcome either disease without working together. In this, the Malaysian AIDS Foundation and our sister organization the Malaysian AIDS Council have long been fortunate to have the support of MOH, the Global Fund for AIDS, TB & Malaria individuals and organisations including Yayasan Sime Darby, Berjaya Corporation, Yayasan Petronas, Karex Bhd and many more who believe in us and in the cause. We are now of course extremely grateful to have Tan Sri Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah and Sunway Group joining them. Thank you, Tan Sri, not only for being tonight’s title sponsor but also for your commitment to support our colleagues in Sabah and Sarawak to deliver much needed HIV prevention and treatment services to those in rural areas with your generous donation of 4.1M for the MAF-Sunway Borneo Hope Project.
We are, in what I would like to think the final stretch to bring an end to AIDS as a public health threat in Malaysia. We have extremely effective prevention and treatment tools to do that. Together, these measures will ensure that we bring an end to AIDS. No small feat, but other countries less advanced and more ravaged by HIV are well on their way to achieving it – Botswana, Rwanda, Cambodia to name a few. How have they done it? With political will, strong collaboration between the health and scientific sectors and the community and of course financial investment. Can Malaysia replicate this? Of course we can. We have shown what we’re capable of with our COVID19 vaccine programme, it is now time to turn our attention once again to the HIV pandemic.
However, there is one big difference between dealing with HIV and COVID 19, in that realistically, Malaysia will need to address pervasive stigma and discrimination partly fueled by laws and policies that prevent those at risk from accessing prevention and care services. For example, laws and policies that continue to criminalise behaviours such as Akta 377 and numerous punitive drug laws that have done more harm than good.
Both HIV and SARS COV2 that caused the COVID 19 pandemic are what we call zoonosis when animal viruses jump species due to human encroachment into their natural habitats. The devastations caused by both these pandemics should remind us not just of our shared humanity but that we are sharing this earth, this planet with other species. Hence the clarion call for ESG and Planetary Health by the Sunway Group, BURSA Malaysia and others has not come soon enough. Ignore the perils of climate change and our very survival is at risk. With that, the Malaysian AIDS Foundation is proud to do our bit tonight by ensuring that this event, as glamorous as it is, adheres to the Sustainability guidelines. Every dish, every effort, has been made to meet the necessary requirements. It is our hope that this will be the gold standard by which other such events are held. Another key feature of the Red Ribbon Gala is that despite the glamour, we aim to keep cost to an absolute minimum, in this case 16% of earnings, so that your donation goes to where it is needed most. This has been made possible by the generosity of our partners and sponsors. Sunway Resort for providing F&B at cost, Dato Seri Jessie Lai for sponsoring Kris Dayanti and Malaysian Airlines for flying her across for us, the Red Ribbon Celebrity Supporters, Winnie K, Deborah Henry and Syed Dino our emcees, Pam and her amazing Gabung Cipta production team and of course the fabulous Razak Flora who ensures that the RRG holds up to its reputation as being one of the most glamorous events in the KL calendar since Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir our Patron first hosted it in 1996.
I reserve my final and heartfelt thanks to our Executive Director Jasmin Jalil and his small but amazing team – Razif, Azahemy, Abdullah, Goh, Ravi, Zarinah and the rest of the MAF secretariat who have been working day and night to bring you RRG 2022, and are also already hard at work planning RRG 2023 and 2024!
We hope we will continue to have your support to make RRG 2023 and 2024 a big success and be a part of Ending AIDS in Malaysia.
MESSAGE BY SUNWAY
By Sunway Group Founder & Chairman/ Gala Honorary Chair, YBhg Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Jeffrey Cheah AO.
Sunway is proud to be a long-term partner of the Malaysian AIDS Foundation (MAF). I am also delighted to, once again, present the Sunway – MAF Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Award to the recipients for their outstanding work in HIV/AIDS activism in our country.Sunway’s support for MAF is based on our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) commitment to try and leave no one behind, which is why our CSR projects are focused on helping the marginalised and forgotten sectors of society, which includes People Living with HIV.
HIV-AIDS poses a threat to their very lives, while the stigma and ostracism they face robs them of their dignity.
Advancements in HIV treatment and our understanding of the disease have completely transformed and improved the quality of life for those who are affected by HIV.
It is clear that we have the tools to eradicate this disease within our generation, but not everyone has equal access to quality healthcare and life-saving treatment.
If we are to build a more progressive, sustainable and inclusive Malaysia, we must all do everything we can to replace bigotry and hatred with compassion and care.
Our belief that no one should be left behind is one of the fundamental reasons why Sunway is deeply committed towards advancing the sustainable development agenda.
We have fully embraced the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN-SDG).
Sunway’s efforts in advancing the sustainability agenda are driven by the conviction that realising the 17 UN-SDGs is not the responsibility of governments alone.
Building a sustainable future requires the commitment of all elements of society, the private sector, academia, civil society, and, of course, every single individual. We are all in this together.
Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah AO
Sunway Group Founder and Chairman
Sunway-MAF Red Ribbon Gala Honorary Chairman
We are a non-profit organisation that raises funds to support the activities and programmes of the Malaysian AIDS Council and its partner organisations.
The Malaysian AIDS Foundation (MAF) was formed in 1993 and fully incorporated in 2003 under the Trustees Incorporation Act (1952) to carry out the following objectives:
Prevent the spread of HIV in Malaysia
Render support to People Living with HIV in Malaysia
Protect the human rights of people in Malaysia who may suffer discrimination due to their HIV status
Provide education on matters pertaining to HIV/AIDS to the family and friends of people living with HIV/AIDS, the general public and the authorities at the national and local level in Malaysia
Provide financial assistance or such other forms of support to bodies, organisations and institutions, including the Malaysian AIDS Council, in carrying out the activities and services described above
The Sunway-MAF Red Ribbon Gala is a celebration of resilience and continuity of the AIDS response in Malaysia.
It is the time of the year for Malaysia’s business community, corporate citizens and philanthropists to come together and demonstrate their support to the HIV/AIDS cause and keep abreast of the latest development in HIV/AIDS advances, all within the warm and genteel Black-Tie ambience of the Gala.
The Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Award was established in 1996 by MAF as a thank you note to Organisations / Individuals for their exemplary courage, commitment and dedication to creating a sustainable impact on communities most affected by HIV/AIDS.
MAF highly values these achievements and this award allows MAF to recognise the excellence shown by the award’s recipient. We hope that by putting the spotlight on the outstanding recipient, others will be inspired to align themselves with the HIV /AIDS cause and work together in strengthening existing partnerships and creating new ones.

KOMITED MALAYSIA
KOMITED Malaysia (Komuniti Intervensi Dadah Malaysia) or DiC Malaysia (Drugs Intervention Community Malaysia) was established in 2001. It is a registered non-profit Community Based Organisation (CBO) initiated, led and run by former drug users. Formed in 1998 and officially registered in 2001 as an NGO with the intention of addressing the negative impact of drug use and HIV/AIDS in Kuantan, the programmes expanded to the entire state of Pahang from 2007 onwards in line with the increasing need for serious intervention.
Since 2011, DiC Pahang has reached a new milestone when the organisation expanded nationwide and registered as KOMITED Malaysia. For the past two decades, they have collaborated with the Malaysian AIDS Council and the Ministry of Health as the grassroots implementer of the National Harm Reduction Programme Policy and Needle Syringe Exchange Programme.
As a CBO that offers comprehensive model of “Womb to Tomb” care services and support on HIV/AIDS and drug abuse, KOMITED Malaysia operates five Treatment and Care Centres for both women and men, two Drop-in centres for women and men, one shelter care centre for children infected and affected with HIV and one PLHIV centre for senior citizens. Residents at the various centres consist of PLHIV, sex workers, transgender, drug users and others.
MAHFURIZAL AMEERLATFI
Mahfurizan Ameerlatfi, or affectionately known as Along, is the most experienced and committed peer educator. In his 11 years of service, he has supported more than 3,000 PLHIV and trained hundreds of peer supporters and healthcare practitioners about HIV and AIDS.
Along has a special talent of motivating newly diagnosed PLHIV to give them hope and encouragement, uplifting their spirits and ready to start treatment. He makes himself available on the phone 24 hours, 7 days a week to the detriment of his own health and well-being, but it is a call of duty that he finds hard to ignore. He devotes himself to standing by PLHIV who are terminally ill, providing solace, warm hugs and dignity in their final days and helping their families with funeral arrangements and overcoming grief.
Through his sheer determination and uncompromising sense of duty, Along managed to get many PLHIV, including those at the AIDS stage, to become viral suppressed, leading high quality of life and wellness. He is always at the forefront in the fight to end stigma and discrimination against PLHIV in his personal and professional capacity.
As a testament to his vast knowledge and empathy to the cause, Along is particularly relied on by the nurses and doctors to provide peer support to those at hospital wards being treated with multiple co-infections such as TB, acute syphilis and pneumonia, as well as those facing critical mental health issues. Looking forward to a better future for PLHIV as a result of better and wider access to treatment, he currently grooms the next generation of PLHIV leaders and NGOs with the hope we will not lose the momentum of progress that has been made thus far in our fight to end AIDS.
MOHD RAFFI’E BIN JAAFAR
Mohd Raffi’e bin Jaafar has served voluntarily in the field of HIV/AIDS for almost 20 years. As early as 2000, he was one of the first to have a Syariah discussion on the issue of transgender and LGBT which also involved the cooperation of JAWI and the Legal Aid Bureau. He was the pioneer for “Projek Usrah Untuk Komuniti LGBT Islam” with the cooperation of Masjid Jamek KL/JAWI. Besides that, he led and was responsible for the production of Manuals such as Manual Islamic and HIV, and Transgender and Islam Manual. In addition, he was also one of the first to be involved in efforts to deal with the issue of PLHIV body management among drug users and transgender. He was a dedicated person and multi-tasked when he worked at Ikhlas Drugs User Programme. Among his roles at that time included as a counsellor, nurse, cook and guest speaker.
Among those newly diagnosed with HIV, he is often regarded as “Abang Long” who is a resourceful person. They look to him for advice and seek his views on various aspects such as treatment, medication, marriage and moral support to continue their survival as a person who has been infected with HIV.
He took the initiative to turn his house into a temporary shelter and conducted Quran classes for the LGBT. He is also very easy to reach through his personal phone number and various social media platforms apart from being quoted by famous bloggers such as Blog “Aku HIV Positif (AHP) – (the late Wahid aka Abg Pie) and HIV Dalam Darahku (Najmi). Nowadays, he works solo and is actively involved in Amal Firdausi Clump (AFIC) and sacrifices a lot of time and money to help PLHIV.
Thank you very much for your support to our Ending AIDS Mission.

How we plan to use the Gala Proceeds
The Medicine Assistance Scheme is officially supported by the Ministry of Health.
The Medicine Assistance Scheme by MAF provides subsidy for second-line ARV medicine to low-income patients in Malaysia who are not covered by the Government.
Mental health issues are prevalent among PLHIV and the key affected populations.
The stress associated with living with HIV has adversely affected the mental health of many PLHIV. They often develop mood anxiety and cognitive disorders that lead to severe depression and self-destructive behaviour – including dropping out from treatment and withdrawal from HIV care and services.
Among the key affected populations, mental health issues have been associated with increased HIV acquisition and transmission risk behaviours and documented as a barrier to the uptake of HIV prevention tools such as HIV testing and Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis
(PrEP).
At present, MAF is strongly promoting the integration of mental health treatment as part of the HIV Care Continuum programme. Together with our sister organisation, the Malaysian AIDS Council, we are putting together a mental health training programme for our outreach workers and PLHIV peer supporters who have always been the first line of contact and a trusted source of information for the HIV community and key affected populations.
Counselling session, group gathering, safe space for conversation and referral services to mental health professionals are some of the basic services being offered to the community.
MAF is pleased to bring back Indonesian powerhouse Krisdayanti as the headline performer at the MAF Red Ribbon Gala. She previously rocked the 2019 edition of our Gala with a stunning performance that became the talk of the town.
Her highly-anticipated, post-pandemic return to Malaysia for this prestigious event also symbolises her compassion and dedication to the HIV/AIDS cause which she also champions with great vigour in her home country. Her upcoming performance at the Gala is also meant to send a strong message that the fight to end AIDS goes across borders.
"Everyone has a role to play in the fight to end the disease. There are nearly 38 million people living with HIV and we need to have social responsibility from everyone to provide attention and comfort so they don’t feel discriminated against. Please don’t judge others from the outside, everyone deserves a chance to live”
