On behalf of the Board of Trustees of the Malaysian AID Foundation, I would like to thank you for your presence at the MAF Miri Gala. Our mission is to end AIDS in Sarawak, and your participation will help us achieve that goal.
We have come a long way in the fight against HIV/AIDS, thanks to advancements in medical treatments and prevention strategies. However, to truly end this epidemic, we need more than just science. We require a supportive environment, strong policies, and backing from stakeholders and public health authorities.
In Sarawak, we have received tremendous support from the State Government and local partners, especially our Patron, YBhg Datin Patinggi Datuk Amar Hajah Jamilah Anu, whose commitment to the cause has been unwavering.
I understand that the AIDS response in Sarawak has unique challenges, particularly in reaching out to patients in remote areas. Late diagnosis remains a concern, indicating the need for increased awareness and regular testing. But I am optimistic, that if we can strengthen our healthcare system and remove all barriers to HIV testing and treatment, Sarawak can become the first state in Malaysia to end AIDS.
None of this would be possible without the generous support of our donors and partners. We extend our gratitude to the CIMB Foundation, Interhill Group, and all other contributors who have made this event possible. Our appreciation also goes to our media partners, Red Ribbon Celebrities, Guest Artists, and the hardworking team at the Malaysian AIDS Foundation secretariat.
Thank you all for your unwavering support. Let’s make this evening of glamour and philanthropy memorable and impactful.
Thank you.
I send my delighted greetings to all participants of the Malaysian Aids Foundation (MAF) Miri Gala 2023. Our Group is indeed honoured to be part of this meaningful event as a sponsor.
At this juncture, allow me to share some words of wisdom by our Founder, the late Datuk Hii Chang Pee:
“I came to this world with no coins in my pocket. I will leave this world the same way. What matters ultimately is knowing that I have done my part, have helped somebody and made a difference in someone’s life. To me, only this is truly meaningful.”
At Interhill, these words continue to be the driving force behind our passion to give back to our communities through the implementation of corporate responsibility programmes such as the Interhill Education Initiative, environment preservation activities and financial aid programmes for schools and NGOs throughout the years.
I applaud MAF’s effort in expanding Teratak Kasih Tok Nan and the Sarawak Health Access Programme (SHAPE) to the Northen Region of Sarawak as part of its initiatives to end AIDS in Sarawak. As a Sarawakian, I’m delighted with MAF’s initiative to showcase the Penan community’s cultural heritage and the best of Sarawak’s cuisine in the Gala.
May all of us continue to be inspired to make a difference in our communities as together, we can achieve more.
Thank you.

The Malaysian AIDS Foundation (MAF) has been supporting Sarawak’s HIV Treatment, Prevention, Care, and Education programme for over a decade with focus on assisting individuals living below the poverty line. Currently, our efforts benefit more than 1,000 direct beneficiaries.
TERATAK KASIH TOK NAN
In Kuching, Sarawak, our One-Stop Centre for PLHIV – otherwise known as Teratak Kasih Tok Nan, is providing a wide range of services – from treatment referral to transportation assistance and from halfway home to empowerment programme for single mothers living with HIV.
SARAWAK HEALTH ACCESS PROGRAMME (SHAPE)
As an extension to our HIV services, MAF also supports the hospital travel subsidy programme that not only helps HIV patients, but also others who are diagnosed with chronic diseases. The subsidy programme – known as the Sarawak Health Access Programme (SHAPE) – currently benefits more than 200 hardcore poor beneficiaries across the Kuching and Samarahan Division.
EXPANDING OUR SERVICES TO MIRI
MAF recognises the significance of extending its service reach to other parts of Sarawak, especially Miri, which has the second-highest number of HIV cases after Kuching. To accomplish this, we plan to establish a Teratak Kasih Tok branch in Miri that will offer the same quality of care, support, and compassion to People Living with HIV.
Furthermore, our expansion plans will cover SHAPE, providing medical travel subsidies to chronic disease patients seeking treatment at Miri Hospital or other government-run healthcare facilities within the Division.
Teratak Kasih Tok Nan owes its existence to Datin Patinggi Datuk Amar Jamilah Anu’s unwavering dedication and her personal connection to the struggle of the underserved HIV community in Sarawak. The Centre is a tribute to her late husband, Allahyarham Pehin Sri Tan Sri Datuk Patinggi Haji Adenan bin Haji Satem, a compassionate figure loved by the people of Sarawak.
To this day, Datin Patinggi Datuk Amar remains a staunch supporter of People Living with HIV in Sarawak, fulfilling her role as the Patron of MAF Sarawak Branch.
HIV & AIDS IN SARAWAK
As many as 2,720 people have tested positive for HIV in Sarawak since 2015.
This is a breakdown showing the percentage distribution of the cumulative cases of HIV infection in Sarawak.
Within the same period, 1,093 cases, or nearly 40 % of People Living with HIV were diagnosed with AIDS in Sarawak.
MALAYSIAN AIDS FOUNDATION
The Malaysian AIDS Foundation Miri Gala is a premium fundraising event aimed at generating crucial funds to support the expansion of Teratak Kasih Tok Nan and the Sarawak Health Access Programme to Miri, Sarawak. The Back Tie Affair will take place on 6 August 2023 at Pullman Miri Waterfront.
The Malaysian AIDS Foundation Miri Gala will be held in the most exclusive and distinguished venue in town – the Pullman Miri Waterfront Hotel, the flagship property of the Interhill Group in Miri. The hotel is renowned for its impeccable service, luxurious amenities, and elegant ambiance.
The highly anticipated Gala event will feature an unforgettable performance by Sarawak’s very own favorite daughter and multi-award winner, Dayang Nurfaizah, who will be teaming up with Bob Yusof, a celebrated ballad performer hailing from Limbang, to deliver a sensational musical experience. The duo’s dynamic setlist will feature an electrifying blend of both new and classic tunes, sure to captivate audiences of all ages. Making a special appearance is Amir Masdi, an up-and-coming rock star known for his electrifying stage presence and high-voltage performance.
Both Dayang and Bob are the original lineup of the MAF’s Red Ribbon Celebrity Supporters who have been volunteering with MAF for more than a decades, and dedicated their times and effort to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS to members of the public.
At the Malaysian AIDS Foundation Miri Gala, MAF plans to pay tribute to the remarkable indigenous Penan tribe.
The Penan are among the precious few remaining nomadic hunter-gatherers in Borneo who have chosen to preserve their ancestral ties to the rainforest and maintain a lifestyle that their ancestors have cherished for countless generations.
The Gala will showcase the Penan People’s cultural heritage through tribal dance performances and on-site exhibition of their artistry, particularly their delicate basket weaving and the ancient art of “Keleput” (blowpipe) making.
We hope our efforts will contribute to a greater appreciation of their culture and existence.
The Penan Women Project is an extraordinary social enterprise initiative that aims to foster a deeper appreciation for the traditional weaving craft of the Penan People. MAF and our Gala partner, the Interhill Group, are delighted to present this venture to you.
By supporting the Penan Women Project, we are not only enhancing the well-being and household income of 60 Penan weavers and their families, but also preserving their culture and heritage.
The exquisite woven artistry of the Penan community is seamlessly incorporated into innovative and contemporary designs, which are then marketed both locally and internationally.
The products crafted through the Penan Women Project can be purchased at Pullman Miri Waterfront and the Pullman Kuching Hotel as part of the Interhill Group’s corporate social responsibility initiative. Additionally, these products are conveniently available for purchase online at penanwomenproject.com
