ARTAID returns to raise funds for Malaysians living with HIV
ARTAID, the annual charity exhibition by the Malaysian AIDS Foundation is making a comeback at Whitebox @ Publika this month. It will be officially launched on Sunday, 23rd September, 2018, and will be open to the public from 24th until 27th September.
Themed 'DIRI', ARTAID'18 will showcase artworks by 44 established as well as new and emerging local artists. The theme, which means 'self-reflection', will give the artists an opportunity to put on canvas how they see themselves -- reflecting, looking in, looking out, in search of the bigger picture by returning the gaze on themselves.
As in previous years, ARTAID'18 is led by Ahmad Zakii, Malaysia’s most acclaimed fine artist, who is also a Trustee of the Malaysian AIDS Foundation, with curatorial support from his fellow artist, Noor Mahnun Mohamed.
The Malaysian AIDS Foundation hosted its inaugural ARTAID charity exhibition in 2015 which was a success and has since become a much-anticipated event by art aficionados, collectors and fans of Malaysian contemporary artworks. Last year’s event saw 44 visual artists contributing exciting and varied musings on the theme ‘BEBAS’. ARTAID'17 successfully raised RM300K in artwork sales.
Proceeds from ARTAID'18 will be channelled to Treatment, Care and Support programme for People Living with HIV, especially women and children.
In Malaysia, more than 88,000 people are living with HIV, many of whom are from underprivileged background with limited access to basic healthcare and vulnerable to marginalisation due to the prevailing social stigma attached to HIV & AIDS. Through its activities and programmes, MAF hopes to reach out to as many people living with HIV as possible with health services as well as care and compassion so as to improve their quality of life and empower them to contribute positively back to society.
All purchases will be entitled for tax exemption receipt issued by the Malaysian AIDS Foundation.
The Exhibition Advisor: Ahmad Zakii Anuar
Ahmad Zakii Anwar is perhaps one of the most illustrious and established fine artists in Malaysia. His name has been synonymously linked with art where the mention of the name Zakii will invoke one of the most popular artworks in the country.
Born in 1955, Zakii is known to have produced one of the most engaging, realistic and desired fine arts not only in Malaysia but throughout the region as well as in other continents. Zakii is one of the earliest fine artists who is widely regarded as a first-generation artist when he graduated from the MARA Institute of Technology Malaysia School of Art and Design. He started off as a graphic designer and was involved in the advertising industry where he produced some of the most engaging advertising creatives during his time. From there, he continued to establish his name by converting to fine art where his techniques have been exemplary and world class.
Zakii’s work is easily recognisable as he excels in using medium like charcoal and oil to exude his still-life into realistic portraits and paintings. His work has been loud and large and is widely sought after by collectors, galleries and art spaces around the region.
Ahmad Zakii has been a Trustee of the Malaysian AIDS Foundation since 2012 and has actively contributed his talent in supporting various MAF fundraising efforts.
