MATRON FADZILAH ABDUL HAMID HONOURED WITH THE MALAYSIAN AIDS FOUNDATION TUN DR SITI HASMAH AWARD 2018

Announcement of the Malaysian AIDS Foundation’s Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Award 2018 Awardee and Patron’s Awards which was held on Sunday, 16th December 2018 at Hilton Kuala Lumpur.

 

KUALA LUMPUR, 16 December 2018 — The contributions of Matron Fadzilah Abdul Hamid towards ending AIDS in Malaysia has been recognised by the Malaysian AIDS Foundation (MAF) when she was honoured with the Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Award during the Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Award 2018 Gala Dinner held at Hilton Kuala Lumpur.

Matron Fadzilah, 68, was presented with a trophy, certificate of excellence and a cash prize of RM10,000 by Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali during the glittering black-tie event.

Matron Fadzilah a veteran of the Malaysian HIV response was a nurse for more than thirty years who helped establish Rumah Solehah, a shelter home for HIV positive women and children under the auspices of the Islamic Medical Association of Malaysia (PPIM) with the support of the Ministry of Health. The Home was established on her own land and has been her labour of love, her blood, sweat and tears for more than two decades. Through this shelter home she has provided shelter, love, care and support to more than 400 women and children living with HIV.

The Gala Dinner was officiated by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

As an HIV/AIDS focused organisation, MAF recognises individuals and organisations who have made significant contributions towards meeting the goal of ending the AIDS epidemic as a public health concern in Malaysia.

For the first time, MAF also awarded the Patron’s Awards for:

1. Excellence in CSR awarded to Sime Darby Foundation – accepted on stage by Puan Hajjah Yatela Zainal Abidin, CEO of the Sime Darby Foundation;

2. Outstanding Contribution to Ending AIDS awarded to Teratak Kasih Tok Nan Project – accepted on stage by YB Datuk Amar Jamilah Anu;

3. Long Service Award awarded to: i) YBhg Dato Maznah Jalil,

ii) YBhg Datin Mina Cheah-Foong,

iii) En Hisham Hussein.

They received their recognition trophy from MAF Patron Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir.

Also present were Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, Deputy Health Minister Dr Lee Boon Chye, UNAIDS Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific Eamonn Murphy, WHO Country Representative for Malaysia, Singapore & Brunei Dr Lo Ying-Ru Jacqueline, MAF Chairman Professor Dato’ Dr Adeeba Kamarulzaman and Hilton Malaysia Regional General Manager Jamie Mead.

Of the award recipient, Dr Adeeba said Matron Fadzilah has been providing care and support to people living with HIV from the beginning of the epidemic when people living with HIV were ostracised and shunned by their family and friends.

“We hope that the Award recipients will inspire and encourage Malaysians to join in our efforts to end AIDS by 2030. Together we can make this happen.”

More than 500 attendees from business leaders from multinational corporations and companies, supporting sponsors and partners of the Award, organisational partners and other dignitaries also turned up for the event.
