#GIRLPOWER Gala Dinner 2019

#GIRLPOWER GALA DINNER

Malaysian AIDS Foundation is pleased to announce #GIRLPOWER GALA DINNER - a charity benefit that will be held in conjunction with International Women’s Day 2019 that aims at rallying support for Malaysian women living with HIV.

CELEBRATING INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

The International Women’s Day, held annually on 8th of March, is a worldwide event with a human rights theme, highlighting the social, economic, cultural and political achievements and contributions made by women.

To celebrate the empowerment, independence and courage of Malaysian women who have made significant contributions to the country’s development, the Malaysian AIDS Foundation will be holding the #GirlPower Gala Dinner on March 8, 2019 at Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur.

THE DINNER HIGHLIGHT

In our quest to create a meaningful celebration, we will invite distinguished women to speak on issues close to their heart and exchange their success stories in the fields of AIDS activism and entrepreneurship.

Along with a delectable multi-course dinner, guests will also be treated to amazing live entertainment by accomplished jazz and soul singer, Atilia Haron.

TRIPLE A CHALLENGE
BY MALAYSIAN AIDS FOUNDATION

From 25-28 March 2019, Hezrina Hedzer, a 50-year-old homemaker and proud grandmother from Kuala Lumpur will participate in the grueling ULTRA ASIA RACE, a 160km foot race that that will take place in North West of Vietnam, in the region of Mai Châu, near the Laos border.

The unforgiving, four-stage self-supported run will take participants across the country’s highlands at an elevation of 6,000 ft above sea level. It is ranked among the toughest foot race event in South East Asia – a demonstration of steely determination and the ultimate display of human endurance for the elite runners who are bold enough to attempt it. Hezrina is pursuing this Herculean task in her bid to raise funds for the Triple A, or the Act Against AIDS Campaign that raises funds for treatment, care and support programmes for underprivileged women living with HIV. Keeping her company for The Ultra ASIA Race is veteran marathon runner Jeff Lau, who is also the Malaysian AIDS Foundation Red Ribbon Youth Ambassador. Jeff himself has taken part in numerous extreme foot races abroad to raise funds for AIDS.

THE VENUE

Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur has been known as one of the iconic landmarks located along Jalan Sultan Ismail.

The hotel is committed to delivering seamless 5-star hospitality that strikes a balance between business and personal stay away from the comforts of your home. Fresh from a multimillion-dollar facelift, the landmark hotel has now taken a new look, drawing its guests into a grandeur space that recreates a refined hospitality while incorporating simplicity in style.

Sheraton Imperial is drawn to the plight of women living with HIV, and has graciously agreed to become the principal partner and host of the #GIRLPOWER Gala Dinner 2019 – drawing on its own strength as one of the capital’s leading hospitality providers to cater to the Gala Dinner Guests and at the same time, joining hands with the Malaysian AIDS Foundation to raise funds to support its women with HIV empowerment programmes.

HIV IN WOMEN AND CHILDREN

Women and children living with HIV are more vulnerable to the negative socio-economic impact of the epidemic in addition to the devastating physical one if left untreated. Widowed and with their children orphaned, these women are left to survive on their own as a result of family abandonment and live in impoverished conditions.

Due to the prevailing stigma imposed by their surrounding community, these women are forced to live in constant fear, thus pushing them even further to the fringes of society. This creates a barrier for them to gain access to HIV treatment and care facilities provided by the government and non-government organisations.

MAF strives to address gender and socio-economic disparities and socio-health determinants that increase women’s and girls’ vulnerabilities to HIV through provision of Treatment, Care and Support programmes that will improve their quality of health and empower them with life skills education.
