ARTAID18 charity art exhibition to raise funds for PLHIV
KUALA LUMPUR, 23 September 2017 – ARTAID is an annual charity driven exhibition of paintings, photography and sculptures, to raise funds for the Malaysian AIDS Foundation (MAF) with its programme in treatment, care and support of women and children living with HIV. The initiative started in 2015. Last year’s event, ARTAID17 saw 44 visual artists contributing exciting and varied musings on the theme ‘Bebas’. The event successfully raised around RM300,000 in artwork sales.
Organised by The Malaysian AIDS Foundation (MAF), a non-governmental organisation that raises and administers funds to support the activities and programmes of the Malaysian AIDS Council and its partner organisations, ARTAID uses art to raise awareness and support social causes. This charity exhibition will be held at The White Box gallery at Publika to raise funds for people living with HIV (PLHIV).
Returning to the Malaysian AIDS Foundation (MAF) ARTAID series as advisor of ARTAID18 is Ahmad Zakii Anwar who is also a Trustee of the MAF with his piece titled “Empunya Diri” .
In Malaysia, more than 88,000 people are living with HIV, many of whom are with underprivileged backgrounds with limited access to basic health care and vulnerable to marginalisation due to the prevailing social stigma attached to HIV & AIDS. Through its activities and programmes, MAF hopes to reach out to as many people living with HIV as possible with health services, care and compassion, so as to improve their quality of life and enable them to contribute positively to society.

Focussing on the subject of self, titled ‘Diri’, the theme was chosen in response to the idea of how the artists see themselves. Attendees can anticipate a showcase of works created for ARTAID18 by an exciting list of established, new and emerging local artists. Artistic interpretations and creative outcomes have always been mostly about self-expression, emotionally or physically. With ‘Diri’, the artists will dwell on the concept of being, portraiture in the form of introspection and how each defines or emulate their positions as an individual or a part of the society. Reflecting, looking in, looking out, in search of the bigger picture by returning the gaze on themselves.
Funds raised from the exhibition will help people living with HIV/AIDS.

Ahmad Zakii Anwar who has curated past ARTAID events will once again lead the exhibition with his fellow artist friend and collaborator, Noor Mahnun Mohamed. They are pleased that the campaign is growing and bringing people together to support MAF’s efforts. The interest and support received so far is testament to the fact that the people in Malaysia care and are always ready to contribute and make a difference.

The opening of ARTAID18 ‘Diri’ was held at The White Box Gallery at Publika, Kuala Lumpur on Sunday, 23rd September and is open to the public until 27thSeptember 2018.

Malaysian AIDS Foundation
The Malaysian AIDS Foundation (MAF) was formed in 1992 to raise and administer funds to support the activities and programmes of Malaysian AIDS Council (MAC) and its Partner Organisations.
