What is Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)

PrEP is a prevention method used by people who are HIV-negative and at high risk for being exposed to HIV through sexual contact or injection drug use. When someone is exposed to HIV through sex or injection drug use, these medicines can work to keep the virus from establishing an infection.

How effective is PrEP?

PrEP is highly effective for preventing HIV.
PrEP reduces the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 99% when taken as prescribed.
Although there is less information about how effective PrEP pills are among people who inject drugs, we know that PrEP pills reduce the risk of getting HIV by at least 74% when taken as prescribed. Currently, PrEP shots are not recommended for people who inject drugs.
PrEP is less effective when not taken as prescribed.

PrEP Prescription

Truvada (tenofovir disoproxil fumarate 300 mg/emtricitabine 200 mg) is a type of antiretroviral used as PrEP for HIV. Generic versions of the drug – called Tenof EM and Tenvir EM) are also widely prescribed for the same purpose.

PREP is generally safe, but like all medication, it can have side effects in some people.

Some of these side effects are usually experienced during the first few weeks of taking the drug only. These include nausea, tiredness, gastrointestinal symptoms and headache.

PrEP medication can be prescribed for daily use

or on an as-needed basis. It is important to consult with your doctor to determine the appropriate frequency of your prescription.

How can I access PrEP?

At present, you have the option to access PrEP at both Government and Private Healthcare Facilities.

Government Facilities

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is dispensed at public health clinics in Selangor, Klang Valley, Johor, Penang, and Sabah since January 2023.
