Tun Dr Siti Hasmah
Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah binti Haji Mohamad Ali is the wife of the former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. As wife of the Prime Minister, she campaigned tirelessly for women’s health, family planning, drug abuse control and adult literacy. The Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Award was named in her honour to recognise outstanding contributions by civil society to the HIV/AIDS cause.
THE TUN DR SITI HASMAH AWARD 2022
The Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Award recognises outstanding contributions by organisations and individuals towards meeting the goal of ending the AIDS epidemic as a public health concern in Malaysia.
Established in 1996 by the MAF and presented as one of the highlights of the Red Ribbon Gala, it is a ‘thank you’ note to these organisations and individuals for their exemplary courage, commitment and dedication to creating sustainable impact on communities most affected by HIV/AIDS.
MAF places great importance in highlighting excellence in efforts to respond effectively to HIV/AIDS with the hope of encouraging more organisations and individuals to be more proactive, innovative and committed to the cause.
ELIGIBILITY OF NOMINEES
- Malaysian citizen or organisation registered in Malaysia
- Nomination must be made by third party
- Contributions by the nominee must have been within a minimum of 5-year contribution in the field of HIV/AIDS
FIELDS OF WORK FOR CONSIDERATION
- Contribution to the HIV/AIDS cause
- Leadership commitment in the field of HIV/AIDS
- Commitment in ending stigma and discrimination to HIV/AIDS
- Benefit to community served

NOMINATION & WINNER SELECTION
PROCESS AT A GLANCE
NOMINATION
The Malaysian AIDS Foundation (MAF) welcomes nominations for individuals or organisations in recognition of their outstanding contribution to the national HIV/AIDS response. Nomination must be from third party.
SUBMISSION
Completed nomination forms must be received by MAF by Midnight, 31 August 2022.
SCREENING
Nominations received will be screened for eligibility. MAF may contact the nominator to verify the information provided in the nomination form.
JUDGING
MAF will contact all eligible nominees to assess if they have objections for being nominated. Shorlisted nominees and their nominators will be invited for an interview with the Panel of Judges.
SELECTION OF WINNER
The winner will be notified by the MAF.
AWARD
The award will be presented at the Sunway-MAF Red Ribbon Gala 2022 & Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Award, 28 October 2022, Sunway Resort Petaling Jaya.
DR MAHANI NORDIN
Named Winner of The Sunway-MAF Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Award 2021
DR. MAHANI NORDIN, THE AIDS OFFICER AT TERENGGANU STATE HEALTH DEPARTMENT,WAS HONOURED AT THE GALA AS THE WINNER OF THE COVETED SUNWAY-MAF TUN DR SITI HASMAH AWARD FOR 2021.
She was recognised by the Jury for going beyond her call of duty to sustain the local community response to HIV/AIDS. She is one of the co-founders of Komuniti Cakna Terengganu, a communitybased organisation that provides harm reduction services around needle exchange and methadone maintenance to people who use drugs as well as treatment, care and support to People Living with HIV (PLHIV).
On top of her co-founding role, she donated a piece of her own one acre land to the organisation, where a shelter home was built to help men who use drugs recover and integrate into society. A small plot of the same land has been turned into a community farm that allows the residents to attain their livelihoods through a social enterprise. She was also successful in her advocacy work with key state stakeholders,leading the Terengganu state government to designate a seven-acre land to expand Komuniti Cakna Terengganu’s efforts and establish homes and facilities for men, women and children affected by HIV/AIDS.
