HIV Epidemic In Sarawak
4,000
Sarawakians affected
900
Casualties
Since then, the epidemic has affected nearly 4,000 Sarawakians, with 900 reported casualties.
Thanks to the advent of modern medicine and highly effective antiretroviral treatment, we have been able to witness a turning tide of the AIDS epidemic in Sarawak although we are still far from completely eradicating the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
At the same time, AIDS-related prejudice and discrimination still persist until today in Sarawak causing our most vulnerable community members to fall deeper into poverty and pushing people away from HIV testing and treatment services.
Malaysian AIDS Foundation Sarawak Branch
- For PLHIV in Sarawak
- Treatment, Care & support
- SUSTAINABILITY
The Malaysian AIDS Foundation Sarawak Branch was established to address the growing needs of HIV prevention, care and support services for People Living with HIV in Sarawak.
We are big in SUSTAINABILITY.
We promote the sustainability of our clients by nurturing them to good health and linking them to high quality treatment programmes that will make them fit to work and able to lead normal, productive lives as working adults who no longer need charity handouts.
Treatment at The Forefront of AIDS Response
At MAF Sarawak, we put great importance on HIV treatment. Quite literally, this is where our sustainability drive hinges on.
Why treatment is important?
- Continued access to HIV treatment and adherence will ensure better viral suppression outcome which further reduces onward transmission of HIV and improves the quality of life for PLHIV.
- Conversely, poor treatment adherence is associated not only with less effective viral suppression, but also with drug resistance and reduced survival.
As an organisation, we promote sustainability by collaborating closely with local stakeholders involved in HIV/AIDS so that we can avoid duplication of services between different players, and channel our resources to areas that need the most support. We create a platform for long-term partnership with corporate donors from Sarawak and beyond, which is extremely important in order to create institutional stability and fiscal freedom for us to plan ahead in the future.
OUR PROJECTS
Teratak Kasih Tok Nan
In 2017, an important milestone for HIV/AIDS response in Sarawak was met when the first ever halfway home and One-Stop Support Centre for People Living with HIV was established in Kuching. The Centre helps to link patients from rural Sarawak to lifesaving treatment available at Sarawak General Hospital. Low-income patients who were previously forced to neglect their treatment because they couldn’t afford to stay overnight in town are now able to seek comfort and refuge at the Centre.
It was later renamed as Teratak Kasih Tok Nan in honour of the late Pehin Sri Tan Sri Datuk Patinggi Hj Adenan bin Hj Satem,
Teratak Kasih Tok Nan would not be possible without the sheer tenacity and dedication of Datuk Amar Jamilah Anu. It was a deeply personal project – one that she took up after learning about the real struggles of the HIV community in Sarawak who remain hidden and critically underserved due to the overriding stigma and discrimination against those living with the disease.
